Andy Lawson paintings…
’Antithesis’ paintings from 2021 to the present.
‘Antithesis’ is an ongoing series of process/abstract paintings begun in 2020. Thin washes of diluted oil paint have been dripped, poured and often worked into the paper supports directly with my hand/s; often working into mapped out dots and dollops of R&F oil stick residues. Oscillating between intention and chance, plan and reaction, layer upon layer is applied, worked and re-worked toward a final resting place. A resolution. Rather than utilising overly heavy contrasts, the muted pallet invites the subtle nuances of the drips, rivulets and gestures to be searched through and scanned, rather than be taken in and ‘resolved’, so to speak, in one easy viewing (I hope).
I live near the sea on the North Cornwall coast; rusted and weathered objects and the colours of the local landscape and Atlantic Ocean have – perhaps – informed the work. Other inspirations come from everyday objects close to home, orange and pink; a favourite Paul Smith shirt. (not pictured, but lemon yellow and cadmium yellow from a sign in the driveway of the airfield where the studio is… ). There has been a need to create and ‘play’ with paint and materials as a way of balancing so much time spent with digital photography these past few years. And also, as a space to create a certain kind of silence and meditation. ‘Antithesis’ not only refers to the contrasting attributes of the digital and the material… but also to the current political landscape we find ourselves in.
